Brian Orton

Based in southern Oregon, Brian Orton is the creative force behind Orton Pipes, a line of artisan-crafted briar pipes known for their dark, whimsical originality. With a minimalist workshop and a deep appreciation for artistry, Orton produces intricate freehand designs that captivate both the eye and the imagination.

Orton’s journey into pipe making began as a pipe smoker, starting with a humble corn cob as an affordable alternative to cigars. His fascination with the hobby deepened, leading him to admire the freehand creations of Erik Nording—an influence that would shape his own signature style. After three years of smoking pipes, during a particularly challenging time, Orton found solace in creation. Inspired by his Nording and with some prior woodworking experience, he decided to try crafting pipes himself. The craft resonated with him immediately, igniting a passion that has defined his work ever since.

Gothic and fantasy elements intertwine in Orton’s designs, resulting in pipes with extraordinary shapes and distinct textures. His unique rustication techniques often mimic natural patterns, such as his "tree rustication," which evokes bark layered with mossy accents. A variation of this finish resembles volcanic terrain, with red fissures resembling molten lava. These organic details showcase his remarkable ability to blend nature's intricacies with imaginative artistry.

Every Orton pipe is hand-carved using a Dremel and simple tools, ensuring each piece is one of a kind. Some designs defy easy description, bearing the unmistakable "Orton distinction." These pipes are not only functional smoking instruments but also captivating works of art, offering an unparalleled experience to those who own them.

Through his unique vision and dedication to his craft, Brian Orton has carved a niche in the world of artisan pipes, creating pieces that are as intriguing to behold as they are satisfying to smoke.
