Russ Cook
Since 1998, Russ Cook has been crafting high-quality smoking pipes that blend classic elegance with personal artistry. Based in Mount Pleasant, Michigan, where he has lived his entire life, Russ began making pipes part-time, driven by a passion for the craft and a desire to create affordable yet premium smoking instruments. Over the years, his reputation has grown, earning him a devoted following among pipe enthusiasts.
Russ’s approach to pipe making is hands-on and meticulous. Similar to many other old world carvers, Russ shapes his pipes largely by hand, allowing him exceptional control over every detail. His designs range from English classics with an American twist to imaginative freehand creations, including unique pickaxes and wax-drip-inspired styles. His finishes vary widely, from smooth and sandblasted to heavily rusticated and intricately carved. Each pipe is engineered with the smoking experience in mind, featuring hand-cut stems and carefully chosen accents like antler, horn, exotic woods, and Corian, a composite material that adds striking depth and sheen.
Russ debuted his work at the 2003 Chicago Pipe Show and has been a regular at major pipe shows ever since, including those in Columbus, St. Louis, Richmond, and others. He values these events not only as opportunities to showcase his craft but also as a way to connect with customers, fans, and fellow artisans. Many of his clients are repeat customers, often commissioning custom pieces that highlight his attention to detail and commitment to quality.
For Russ, pipe making is more than a business—it's a labor of love. He takes pride in creating pipes that are as functional as they are beautiful, refusing to finish any piece that doesn’t meet his exacting standards. His goal is simple: to provide smokers with a pipe that will be cherished for a lifetime, at a price accessible to the average enthusiast.
As Russ says, “Making a great smoking pipe takes more than just an eye for form. It takes the best tools, years of experience, and a dedication to quality.”
